Soul City was an independent local radio station, specialising in soul music from across the decades. Our initial brief was to develop a corporate identity for the station. The inspiration for our design was taken from the soul music labels of the 1960’s, with the final design paying homage to the Northern Soul movement of the 1970’s in its typography and ‘badge’ like finish. The station transmitted from an old church building and our next task was to design the interior which included a themed soul city bar. The colours of the logo were the basis of the design. The interior had a retro yet slick feel, with one prominent feature in the seating been shaped in the centre of the bar like the ‘S’ of the Soul City logo. Black & white images of famous artists completed the theme. Our final task on the project was to design the upstairs of the building which the client wanted to use as a private club. The club was called ‘The Fat Cigar’. Our thoughts for styling immediately went to our connections with the word cigar. Cuba is famous for its cigars and Havana, the capital, is famous particularly for its own eclectic style. So this was the major influence in our interiors for the Fat Cigar Club, marble floors, wooden furniture and elegant leather sofas, plus imposing murals on the walls.
