The London Safety Camera Partnership is a road safety initiative aimed at reducing casualties caused by speeding and red light running in the London area. To achieve their aims the partnership operates a combination of fixed speed, mobile speed and red light camera sites across London. The use of speed cameras is highly contentious with many sections of the public, so our communications task was a challenge to change these perceptions. We set about the task by developing a strong corporate housestyle to help consistency of message. The content of our communication needed to be authoritative and persuasive, yet at the same time provocative and striking, to get over the very serious message ‘that speeding kills’. Our work included regular newsletters, work with schools and poster campaigns to highlight the danger of speeding, particularly to young male drivers. We also developed for the client an interactive Flash quiz game which highlighted road safety issues. The game targeted different types of road users with a series of multiple choice questions. The game was installed onto two touch screen kiosk units which toured as part of a mobile road safety exhibition.
